My friend Ruby and I were at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant enjoying the unusually warm fall day. Scott’s is a favorite of mine for a number of reasons. First they have a great view of the Estuary and we can watch the sail boats coming and going. Then the food is always great and the wait staff is always friendly.
Today our waitress was Yucati who I’ve seen for years when visiting Scott’s. But today, for some reason, I decided to talk with her in more depth than just ordering our wine and food.
She asked what we did and I told her about creating the school to take the kids off the streets. She immediately started to tear up. She said that she knows a family who is homeless and they have two young children.
She wanted to know if I had any resources for her to help this family. So I asked her if she belonged to a church. She does and I asked her to ask her pastor to encourage the congregation to start a program for homeless families.
I know of a old grocery store in Richmond that has been abandoned for more than 15 years. It would be perfect for a shelter and if a church took it on as a project, it would gain the community support that would make it work effectively.
When you see a problem in your community, there is always a way of making a difference.
Take a look around you and see what you can do to help those who are not capable of helping themselves.
